So today I’m writing from a seat in the shade behind home plate at Salt River Field. I didn’t plan on staying for the Big League game today, but I checked the MLB app and saw that German Marquez was the starting pitcher so I turned around and came back to watch. I was later surprised when Twitter (thanks @Rockies) showed me that he was pitching the AWAY game, so I’ve been sitting here for 45 minutes watching the field get dragged and watered to watch Chris Rusin instead.
This week was a lot of the same stuff as last week. Every day we’ve had a 10:30 ish stretch, and then had some defense work, batting practice and bullpen work. For the most part our workouts are relatively quick, we’re done before 1:00 and free to spend the afternoon however we’d like. I’ve spent a lot of time sleeping, because I can’t get myself to sleep in past 6 am, which will actually be helpful next week when camp officially opens.
Yesterday after practice a group of 5-10 of us decided to watch the Cactus League opening game. We get to walk through the clubhouse, up a flight of stairs and into the stadium, and we get to sit wherever there is an open seat. When we got in the ballpark we walked down to stand down the right field line by the bullpen.
We got situated in the bottom of the 1st, just in time to see Jake Lamb hit a bomb to dead center field. After a ROCKY (see what I did there?) the Rockies bats came alive and thumped the DBacks putting up multiple runs in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings en route to an 8-4 win. We stayed as long as CarGo, Arenado and all the starters did, lasting until about the 5th inning before we headed out.
This morning was a quick SundayFunday practice, we stretched on Field 5 and then took BP in the cages before calling it a day. I had an early lunch, and then headed in to the stadium. The sun is finally starting to break through and the temperature is starting to warm up. So for this afternoon it’s baseball, and all is right in the world.
